1. First Remarkable Historical Movie of Bollywood
Widely Appreciated Historical Movie: Jhansi ki Raani (1953)
The movie got credit for being the first Technicolor film made in our country. Produced and directed by Sohrab Modi, the lead role of the Warrior Queen Jhansi ki Raani was played by his wife, Mehtab Modi. It was the most expensive Hindi film up until then, with a budget ₹6 million, but became a box office failure.
It couldn’t become a Box office hit Bollywood movie despite the historical accuracy of the events. It was said to be because the lead actress looked a little too old to play the role of the teenage Lakshmibai. It is one of the historical movies of Bollywood that was dubbed into English as ‘The Tiger and The Flame.’ The film stayed true to events detailed in the novel Jhansi ki Raani by Vrindavan Lal Mehra and is considered one of the best movies of Bollywood.
2. The Super Hit Bollywood Movie
The Dream Project of Nandlal: Anarkali (1953)
One of the oldest historical movies of Bollywood – ‘Anarkali’ was directed by Nandlal Jaswantlal. The story was written by Hameed Butt and Nasir Hussain. It went on to become a Box office hit Bollywood movie and a super hit Bollywood movie with the highest collection that year.
The movie showcased the love between Salim –the prince and Anarkali – a dancer in Akbar’s court. It is one of the best movies of Bollywood, which had Lata Mangeshkar singing all its songs except one, Aa Jaan-e-Wafaa, which was crooned by Geeta Dutt. This was because composer Vasant Prakash was the initial music director of the film. After recording one song with Geeta Dutt, he insisted she should sing all songs in the movie. The director opposed this, and C. Ramchandra was appointed as the new music director. Ramchandra wanted Lata Mangeshkar to sing the songs. He also wanted the song by Geeta Dutt to be removed from the movie, though it did not happen.
3. The Box office Hit Bollywood Movie
The Splendid Creation of the Era: Mughal-E-Azam (1960)
Also known as ‘The Great Mughal’ (English title), this is one of the most famous historical movies of Bollywood of all time. Directed by K. Asif and produced by Shapoorji Pallonji, the film depicts the eternal love story of Salim and Anarkali.
It’s stupefying that the production of the movie began in 1944 and could be finished in 1960 only! After many financial difficulties and a complete change of the cast, the movie was finally released on 5th August 1960. The whole movie is black-n-white, but the most famous song ‘Pyar Kiya Toh Darna Kya’ was shot in Technicolor and that was the punch of the film. The cost of this song was more than the whole of the movie. It was the first black and white historical movies of Bollywood that was digitally coloured and re-released in 2004. No wonder it is listed as one of the best movies of Bollywood.
With veteran actors like Prithviraj Kapoor (Akbar), Dilip Kumar (Salim), and Madhubala (Anarkali), it is no surprise that the superhit Bollywood movie is still a hot favourite for many movie buffs.
4. One of the Best Bollywood Movies
The Magnificent Creation : Amrapali (1966)
This is one of those historical movies of Bollywood that was based on the story of the lead character Amrapali who was a royal courtesan of Vaishali (Bihar) during the rule of the Haryanka Dynasty. Vijayanthimala brought Amrapali to life on the screen as Sunil Dutt played the role of the besotted king, Ajathashatru.
While it did not end up as a Box office hit Bollywood movie, but as time passed, people began realizing that it is a perfect example of a Classic. The film went on to gain fame as one of the best historical movies of Bollywood. The dramatic war scenes and the authenticity of the costumes showed the amount of research that was done to get the details right.
The influence of Buddha on Amrapali, the anti-war theme that shines at the end of the movie, made it one of the best movies of Bollywood with a message.
5. A Super Hit Bollywood Movie
A Tribute to the Mahatma: The Making of Mahatma (1996)
Directed by the great man, Shyam Benegal, the movie was based on a book, ‘The Apprenticeship of a Mahatma’ by Fatima Meer. She took up the task of writing the screenplay for the film. Though we cannot call it super hit Bollywood Movie, it is undoubtedly one of the best movies of Bollywood and deals with the life of young Gandhi in South Africa.
It shows the life Mohandas K. Gandhi has led in South Africa for 21 years that changed him from a shy young man to a man of substance, the Mahatma. The director made sure that the movie was as real as it could get, by consciously staying away from unnecessary extravagance, typical to the historical movies of Bollywood.
While Rajit Kapoor; a theatre and film actor, portrayed Gandhi, Pallavi Joshi played the role of his wife, Kasturba. The movie shows her influence on Gandhi and highlights how she was far from the subdued wife; everyone considered her to be. Some of the scenes were shot in actual locations where Gandhi lived in Loop Street, adding authenticity to historical movies of Bollywood.
6. One of the Best Historical Movie of Bollywood
The Epic Historic Biographical Movie: Mangal Pandey- The Rising (2005)
Directed by Karan Mehta, the movie had Amir Khan in the lead role of Mangal Pandey, the Indian soldier who brought out the rebellion against the British in 1857. It is one of the famous historical movies of Bollywood that, despite being categorized with the best movies of Bollywood; Mangal Pandey faced a lot of controversies. The film was accused of distorting the historical events and portraying the soldier inaccurately.
The music by A.R.Rahman and lyrics by Javed Akthar did not precisely push it to become a super hit Bollywood movie. The great start at the box office was not sustained, and it ended up being an average movie, losing the tag of Box office Hit Bollywood Movie.
7. Box office Hit Bollywood Movie
Ashutosh Gowariker’s Ambitious Move: Jodhaa Akbar (2008)
This super hit Bollywood movie had many big names associated with it. With A.R.Rahman composing its marvellous songs, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan enacting the feisty Rajut Princess Jodhaa and Hrithik Roshan bringing Jalal-ud-din Muhammad Akbar, the Mughal Emperor to life onscreen. Jodhaa Akbar was a commercial and critical hit. It is undoubtedly one of the top historical movies of Bollywood.
Ashutosh Gowariker spared no expense in recreating the majestic architecture of that era in his settings. Do you know that it took the costume designer Neeta Lulla more than one and a half years to research the types of clothes during the era and recreate them? The jewellery was exclusively designed and crafted by Tanishq. The aesthetic and magnificent pieces of jewellery worn by Aishwarya Rai in each shot used to weigh several hundreds of kgs!
Inevitably one of the best movies of Bollywood, Jodhaa Akbar, focused on the relationship between the romanticized couple and the conditions during that period.
8. The Superb Historical Bollywood Movie
The Creative Excellence : Bajirao Mastani (2015)
One of the historical movies of Bollywood by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Bajirao Mastani, deals with the love story of Maratha Peshwa Bajirao and his second wife. Though the concept of the film was conceived as early as in the 1990s, it went through various stages of changes in cast and details to finally touch the screens on 18th December 2015 to get into the list of the best historical movies of Bollywood.
Undoubtedly, one of the best movies of Bollywood, the film was a major commercial success and went on to become a super hit Bollywood movie, noted for its grandeur and attention to detail. Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone played the significant roles of Peshwa Bajirao & Mastani, while Priyanka Chopra effortlessly carried the part of the Kashibai (Bajirao’s first wife).
9. One of the Best Bollywood Movies
Periodic Political Thriller- Indu Sarkar (2017)
Co-written, co-produced, and directed by Madhur Bhandarkar, Indu Sarkar is one of those historical movies of Bollywood that deals with life in India during the emergency. The plotline is set during the Emergency Period (19 months) when Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister.
The trailer of the movie set the Indian National Congress into hyperactive mode. The director was accused of showing the then PM in a bad light, though he stated that the film wasn’t a biopic.
While film critics called it average, saying it couldn’t become a Box office hit Bollywood movie, Indu Sarkar received acclamation from the general public as a realistic film without any ‘over the top’ drama. We can safely include it as one of the best movies of Bollywood.
10. Box office Hit Bollywood Movie
Creation of Bhansali: Padmaavat (2018)
Padmaavat is a super hit Bollywood movie by Sanjay Leela Bhansali that went on to become a commercial success despite the controversy. Centred on the life of Queen Padmavati, wife of the Rajput ruler, Maharawal Ratan Singh, the movie deals with the growing obsession of Alauddin Khalji to own her at any cost!
This is again one of those historical movies of Bollywood that attracted controversy from both sides. While the Rajputs were angry for romanticizing Khalji, the critics felt Khalji was portrayed as being too inhuman. That said, Ranveer Singh aced the role to an extent where it affected his health.
There are many other historical movies of Bollywood that banged the silver screen. Rajiya Sultan, Legends of Bhagat Singh, Akbar Salim Anarkali, Manikarnika, and so on…..Panipat is one of the historical movies of Bollywood that was released in December 2019. Another is Tanhaji, starring Ajay Devgn, which deals with the story of Tanhaji Malusare, the close aid of Chatrapati Shivaji. The movie is scheduled to be released on 10th January 2020.
The show will go on, and creators try their best to create more legendary films, but not each arrow strikes the aim! So, being the admirers of Best Bollywood Movies, let’s bid all the brilliant luck to those directors who dare to touch the larger than life stories to be played on the screen. Such directors are legendary in true sense!
